We lost an outstanding brother and much loved father and husband on Thursday May 7th, 2009 when Jack “Hedo” Sauers from chapter 68 passed away. Jack was laid to rest on Monday June 11th, 2009 at the Edgewater-New Smyrna Cemetery in Edgewater Florida. Jack was a former United States Marine and was given a poignant 21 gun salute at his funeral. Hundreds of people attended the outdoor ceremony including dozens of Boozefighters from Florida, Georgia, Tennessee and Ontario.
Jack and his wife Terri were involved in a single vehicle motorcycle accident the first week of April. While being treated in the hospital a chest x-ray showed a mass in one of his lungs. Several weeks later a biopsy showed he had malignant lung cancer. Jack was told he would only live for 8 months without treatment and possibly 2 years if he underwent chemotherapy and radiation.
The morning of May 7th Jack was having difficulty breathing and was admitted to the Bert Fisher Medical Center in New Smyrna Florida – fittingly known as BFMC. He was immediately taken to ICU and told that he would need a respirator to survive. However, he courageously declined any life saving measures. Jack knew the path he was on and by all accounts did not want to prolong the pain and suffering for his family. He passed away several hours later.
Jack’s obituary can be accessed on-line here.
Condolences to Jack’s family and brothers from chapter 23.
